Dubai, UAE – Leila Heller Gallery is pleased to announce artist Azza Al Qubaisi’s solo show opening on 19th September 2022.
Azza Al Qubaisi is an artist, designer and entrepreneur who is popularly known as the UAE’s first Emirati jewellery designer. All her works reveal her prolific creativity, including, jewellery and sculptures made from gold, silver, wood, rubber tyres, palm trees and oudh incense.
As a fierce advocate of all that is home grown and sustainable, Al Qubaisi has been dedicated to a sustainable future for her country. She is seen to use simple materials that were an essential part of Emirati families' lives in the pre-oil period. The natural landscape and cultural references coalesce in her pieces, from the shapes, patterns and textures of the desert to the revival of traditional ancient techniques which can all be easily observed in her works.
The works of Al Qubaisi are a reflection of her journey as an artist, as she explores her Emirati heritage.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in Abu Dhabi and educated in London Al Qubaisi holds MA in Cultural and creative industries from HCT-CERT and BA in Silversmithing, Jewellery design and allied crafts from London Guildhall. Exhibited locally and internationally in group and solo shows, she represented the UAE in “A 1001 steps Festival” in Helsinki, Finland 2004 and the first artist to exhibit in DIFC in 2005. Al Qubaisi exhibited in “Language of the Desert” in Abu Dhabi, 'Three Generations' by ADMAF at Sotheby’s London and UAE national day exhibition at Expo Milan 2015 and “Portrait of Nation” by ADMAF in Abu Dhabi 2016 and Berlin 2017. Al Qubaisi was published in several books and publications, her wearable art from Life series and Bareeq Al Oudh series are published in “500 Earrings: New Directions in Contemporary Jewellery: 2007” by Lark Books. Awarded locally and internationally, winner of the British council YCE
Award, Emirates Women Award in Business and Social Contributions categories. Azza Al Qubaisi creations travel the world as an ambassador of Emirati design for many events and competitions such as: H.H Sh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Festival, FBM Ladies Sports Academy and Camel Racing Association, Al Dhafra Festival and Million Poet.
