Dubai, UAE – Leila Heller Gallery is pleased to announce artist Lorenzo Quinn’s solo show opening on 18th January 2023.
‘Now and Forever’ is a collection of Lorenzo Quinn’s unique new artworks, never seen before by the public, being exhibited along with some of his past works. Behind his artworks, lies the philosophy that everything we say and do in life has a ripple effect and forever alters the course of events. Lorenzo wishes to be a positive wave in an ocean that is at times dark and stormy, but when we join our hands for good we can be the wave of positive change.
Over the past two decades, Lorenzo’s work has evolved in style and in the usage of different mediums, but in essence the emotions and messages behind the work have remained unvaried. Through his art, Lorenzo brings people together, by highlighting what unites us rather than what divides us. He is a firm believer in the power of art to reach through to people in unique and undeviating ways. This collection expresses the course which Lorenzo’s work is undertaking along with its evolution over the years.
An Italian sculptor influenced by the likes of Michelangelo, Bernini, and Rodin; Lorenzo Quinn is a leading figure in contemporary figurative sculpture. Exhibited internationally, his monumental public art and smaller, more intimate pieces transmit his passion for eternal values and authentic emotions. He is best known for expressive recreations of human hands. ‘I wanted to sculpt what is considered the hardest and most technically challenging part of the human body’, he asserts. ‘The hand holds so much power – the power to love, to hate, to create, to destroy’, Lorenzo adds.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born on 7th May 1966 in Rome to the Oscar Award winning Mexican American actor Anthony Quinn and his second wife, costume designer Iolanda Addolori, Quinn’s childhood was split between Italy and the United States. As a young artist and sculptor, his father influenced him profoundly, both through his experience living in the limelight of the movie industry and through his early artistic endeavors.
Quinn studied at the American Academy of Fine Arts in New York, planning to be a Surrealist painter. However, aged 21 he decided that his future lay in sculpture, which could better accommodate his energy and originality. Quinn’s creative ideas spark quickly into life: ‘The inspiration comes within a millisecond’, he says, as he is driven to sculpt by observing life’s everyday energy. Quinn usually conceives each work in writing, and the poetic text is ultimately displayed with the sculpture, as an integral part of the piece, not merely as an explanation. Quinn’s work appears in many private collections throughout the world and has been exhibited internationally throughout the past two decades.
Lorenzo Quinn holds the Guinnes World Record for the largest recycled stainless sculpture in the world. Over 130 tons of recycled steel was used for this sculpture called ‘The Goal of the Century’. It was 7.791 m x 17.468 m x 1.847 m (25 ft 6.732 in x 57 ft 3.712 in x 6 ft 0.4 in) and was achieved by Lorenzo Quinn along with Hyundai Motor Company, on the occasion of FIFA World Cup in Doha, Qatar, on 2 December 2022.
